Neavan Lobban

Musical Director

Neavan is a dynamic and versatile conductor based in Birmingham, UK. Originally from Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, he moved south to study at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, from which he graduated in 2021.

Neavan went on to study conducting at the University of Birmingham under Simon Halsey CBE and Julian Wilkins. He graduated from the renowned masters programme in 2023. Neavan has worked closely with Halsey and Wilkins on numerous projects both at the University and with the CBSO Chorus. In Summer 2023 Neavan assisted in the rehearsals for the CBSO performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana as part of the BBC Proms. Neavan has also served as assistant conductor to composer and conductor Bob Chilcott.

Following a successful period as assistant conductor, Neavan currently serves as Musical Director of Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra.  He has previously worked closely with The People’s Orchestra – a music charity based in West Bromwich. Neavan was the flagship orchestra’s Principal Conductor, lead their central Birmingham Show Choir and directed The People’s Big Band.

A strong advocate of choral music, Neavan is currently a member of the CBSO Chorus under Simon Halsey, and an alumna of the National Youth Choir of Scotland, having been in the flagship choir from 2016-2021 under chorus master Christopher Bell (from whom Neavan has also received tutelage). Neavan took part in several international tours with these groups, notably to New York City’s Carnegie Hall and regular visits to Monaco to perform alongside the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra.
